What is SSL?

The SSL (secure socket layer) protocol is the web standard for encrypting communications between users and web sites. Data sent via an SSL connection is protected by encryption, a mechanism that prevents eavesdropping and tampering with any transmitted data. SSL provides businesses and consumers with the confidence that private data sent to a web site, such as credit card numbers, are kept confidential. Web server certificates are required to initialize an SSL session.

*IMPORTANT: NetRegistry Windows IIS servers now supports Dedicated SSL certificates however Shared SSL certificates are only functional with classic ASP and .NET 1.1. If you wish to purchase Dedicated SSL on Windows IIS, please contact our sales team on 1800 78 80 82.

What is QuickSSL?

QuickSSL is a web server certificate that allows consumers and web sites to conduct safe e-commerce with encrypted SSL connections. QuickSSL web server certificates are compatible with 98% of all browsers.

What is the difference between QuickSSL and QuickSSL Premium?

QuickSSL Premium comes with all the features and benefits of QuickSSL, but also includes the QuickSSL Premium smart seal with dynamic date/time stamp. The smart seal is dynamically generated by GeoTrust and ensures that the domain has been authenticated by GeoTrust. Visitors to your site will also be able to click on the smart seal to verify that your certificate is still valid with GeoTrust, giving your customers and extra piece of mind.

How do I get a Security Seal on my website?

If you purchased QuickSSL Premium, you are able to use our QuickSSL smart seal on your site. This seal will allow users to click and verify that your site is being secured by GeoTrust. To install the smart seal on your site please visit the following URL:
http://www.geotrust.com/quickssl_premium/install_seal.htm

Our standard QuickSSL certificates come with a static logo that you can place on your site to show customers that your site has been secured by GeoTrust. You can download this logo at http://www.geotrust.com/buy/site_seals.asp. The static logo does not allow customers to click and verify your certificate.

How do I switch from using Shared SSL to Dedicated?

If a website is set up to use the NetRegistry Shared SSL service and you have since purchased a dedicated certificate, your site must be updated.  Any links to pages, through the secure server, will need to be adjusted to reflect the dedicated SSL certificate.

For example, instead of customers linking to secure pages through a separate protected server (e.g. https://4tknox.au.com/mydomain.com.au/orderform.html), the link needs to be changed to https://www.domain.com.au/secure/orderform.html for direct and secure access to the content.

Pages to be accessed securely do not need to be located in a specific ‘secure’ folder, as with shared SSL.  The Dedicated SSL certificate links directly to your account so that any content in the account can be accessed securely, if required.

Therefore, if you have a page located at http://www.mydomain.com.au/orderform.html the direct and secure link would be https://www.mydomain.com.au/orderform.html.  Your site will maintain visual consistency across both the secure and non-secure content, maintaining a professional and credible site appearance.

If you have any difficulties adjusting your website, to adapt to the change from Shared SSL to Dedicated SSL please send a request to the Technical Support Team or call

.

I tried going to a secure page and it didn’t work!

Make sure you are linking to the page correctly.  Dedicated SSL certificates link to https://www.yourdomain.com.au  (note the www) so trying to access https://yourdomain.com.au will not work.

Error-"Identity Not Confirmed"

If you have a standard QuickSSL certificate instead of a QuickSSL Premium certificate, and use the Smart Seal javascript, then users will see a popup warning "Identity Not Confirmed".

How long does it take to get a Web Server Certificate?

It typically takes 15 to 20 minutes to process either QuickSSL or QuickSSL Premium Certificates. Once the authentication process is completed, the certificate is issued and will be awaiting approval. After the order is successfully submitted to our system, an automated email will be sent to the email address that was selected as the approver on the order. The approval URL will be included in this email, please click on the link and approve the certificate. The certificate will then be issued via email to the contacts listed on the order. Until this has been completed your order will remain in a pending status.

What is an approval email and why do I need it?

The automated approval process for QuickSSL uses a domain-validation process. It first requests the domain registration WHOIS information for the domain in question and uses the contact email address for approval of the order.

However, if it is a specific case and an alternative is required, clients can create a "standard" new mailbox on the certificate's domain such as root@yourdomain, info@yourdomain, webmaster@yourdomain, admin@yourdomain, etc.

Our automated system can use either (a) an email address listed in the WHOIS for the domain or (b) a standard mailbox for the same domain. If neither of these options are available, you have the option of choosing "Other" during the order process. In that case, a Client Services representative will contact you in order to establish a point of contact that can be considered official for your domain.
