Trouble shooting common error responses

Most frequently answered questions of the average user can be found here.

I have uploaded my Webpages, but when I go to my domain name, I get "Website Under construction" NetRegistry page.

Ensure that your home page (or first page) is called "index.html". Be aware that our servers are case sensitive, as we are running on UNIX platform, so the file name needs to be all lowercase. i.e. Index.html will not work.

I have uploaded my website but now an "Access Denied" error comes up when I try to view it.

There are a few ways to get this error.

1. You uploaded your website using FTP, but your homepage is not named "index.html" and you deleted the original index page from the server. To fix this, login using FTP and rename your homepage to "index.html".

2. You cleared out old files from your website using FTP and have accidentally or purposefully deleted folders named "_vti_*". To fix this, either re-install the Frontpage extensions using The Console, or contact Technical Support with a request to remove the server extensions from your website, as you are not utilising them.

3. You used Frontpage to publish your website, but published to "ftp://ftp.domain.com/" , rather than "http://www.domain.com/". To fix this, re-install the server extensions using The Console's Virtual Host section.

How can I switch off directory listing for a folder if a index file is not present?

Using FTP, you should be able to right click on the folder and click on either "Properties" or "Permissions". Remove the Read permissions for Group and Other. In Unix, the command is "chmod go-r foldername/". If unsure, contact the Technical Support team with a request to get it done for you.

Your support pages always refer to .html files, but I am using .htm. Is there a difference?

There is virtually no difference between .html and .htm file formats, however, be aware that our webservers will first search for a .html file to display, if it is a index/home page. In other words, if you have created a "index.htm" homepage, but did not delete our "index.html", which we provide to you by default, you will have to delete the .html version using FTP software.

I have uploaded my updated pages, but when I go to my website, the information is still old. Why?

There are a few reasons why this might happen. The most typical are listed below.

1. Your computer has stored the pages in memory and is displaying them from cache. To clear local cache, for IE: go to "Tools" -> "Internet Options" -> Click "Delete Temporary Internet files". For Netspace/Mozilla users: go to Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Cache -> Clear Memory and Disk cache. Other web browsers will have similar paths to the Cache options.

2. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has saved these pages in their server memory and is displaying it from their own cache. This is quite common and done in order to reduce their own traffic bills. An ISP will typically hold pages in cache for 2 hours maximum, before refreshing.

3. Your upload may not have been successful. In this case, you would have received an error message in the FTP or Frontpage log. Check the log and resolve appropriately.

4. You changed the file names of the pages and have not re-calculated the links on your website. Check that your page names correspond with your links on the website and adjust accordingly if this is the case.
