How to create product variations in StoreXpress

Product variations are a useful way to offer a similar product but in slight variations such as a T-Shirt. You can create a T-Shirt product with specified pricing and descriptions, then add variations to this product. The variations will copy the pricing and other information from the primary product by default to make life easier for yourself but still allow you to customise them individually.

Below we will provide a tutorial on how to create a product variations using a clothes store as an example.

First, we’ll create our product, if you have yet to do this, click here for the tutorial on creating a product.

  1. Click Products.
  2. Click the Product ID of the product for which the variation is to be created.
  3. Select the Variations tab.
  4. Click Start product variation assistant.

There are 3 very important options on the first page of the variation assistant, those are Product Type, New Attribute, and Value.

Product Type: You can either create a new product type using the variation assistant, or choose an existing product type that you have already created (either while creating variations for a similar product or manually through the product type menu – click here for an article on product types)

New Attribute: Again, attributes may be created in the variation assistant or in the product types menu. Attribute examples include colour, size or weight. So if we are selling T-Shirts which come in different colours and sizes, our Attributes will be Size and Colour.

Values: As mentioned above, values can be created using the variations wizard or in the product type menu. Under the Size attribute, add small, medium and large as an example of values that would be assigned to an attribute.

  6. After choosing or creating a new product type and assigning all the attributes and values required, click [Next]. The following page will auto-generate new product numbers for all the variation options you have, you can modify the product numbers to meet your needs rather than use the auto-generated number assigned to each variations. As we chose 3 different sizes and 4 different colours, 12 new variations with 12 new product numbers are available to Note: depending on your version of StoreXpress, you may only be able to display a certain number of variations per product.

If some variations are not available such as if our small T-Shirts only come in the colour blue. We can simply de-select the product number assigned to the small-green, small-red, and small black variations before assigning the rest to visible.

  7. Once done modifying this screen, click [Next].
  8. On the third screen, choose which variations are displayed. A preview of how each option will look is available on the right hand side of the screen. Choose from variations be displayed in a drop down menu, a table or as thumbnails.
  9. Once you’ve decided, simply click [Finish] to complete the creation of your variations. You can now enter each product variation as if they were individual products and give them individual prices and product images.
