Standard service monitoring is a free service provided to VPS hosting customers. We will scan your machine and its known installed services, and notify you by email if any services are found to be failing.
How it works
The monitoring server will poll discovered services every five minutes with a service timeout of 10s. If a failure is discovered (timeout, connection refused, or protocol error) it will retry the service 5 times after which the service will be flagged as an error and an email sent to the notification email address specified within your account in the console.
The monitoring daemon is capable of monitoring the following services and will consider a node down if the ICMP check fails:
| ICMP | DNS |
| HTTP | FTP |
| HTTP-8080 | SNMP |
| HTTP-8000 | Oracle |
| HTTPS | Postgres |
| SQLServer | POP3 |
| SSH | Windows-Task-Scheduler |
| IMAP |
Ensure that the host monitoring.ded.netregistry.net is white-listed in your firewall rules to get the full value out of the monitoring service.
Activating & Configuring Standard Service Monitoring
The standard service will be enabled by default on all servers. In order to receive email notifications, you will need to add an email address for notifications to the service within the console.
Managing Email Address for Notifications
Under the summary page for your server, there will be an “Email Notifications” heading and input box. Simply enter the email address that you wish to use to receive notifications and alerts and save. It is possible to add multiple email addresses.
Disable Monitoring
If you need to re-boot your machine, it is highly recommended that you suspend your service monitoring beforehand, so as to avoid receiving alert notifications as the server stops responding. There is space for you to record a reason for suspending the monitoring, and a log file will be created and saved each time you disable monitoring services.
Emergency Power-cycle
When you perform a power-cycle, you will be prompted to enter a reason/explanation. A log will be created and recorded each time this is performed.
Features Breakdown
To access specific information regarding monitoring services, click the link under “Server Monitoring” within the server in the VPS hosting section of the console. A summary of each table and option within the service monitoring page is listed below:
Rescan Services
This link will scan the VPS machine for newly installed services (HTTP, SMTP, MySQL, etc), and will automatically add them to the monitoring system.
Refresh
Monitoring is performed in real time. This link will refresh the current screen with the latest available service information.
Overall Number of Outages
This table shows a summary of the number of outages recorded across all services in the past 24 hours, 1 month and 1 year period.
Detailed Number of Outages
This table shows a breakdown of breakdowns by services within the past 24 hours, 1 month and 1 year period. The “Actions” column will allow you to un-manage (stop monitoring) the service. This may be useful in the event that you take the service down yourself for changes and/or maintenance.
Outages
The Outages table records the interface, service, time and date lost and regained, and an outage ID number. By default, the latest 5 outages will be displayed, but it is possible to view a history of outages via the “More Outages” button.
Notifications
The Notifications table records a history of emails that are sent regarding monitoring services. The subject, body of the email and time/date of sending are recorded. The latest 5 outages will be displayed by default, but it is possible to view a history of outages via the “More Outages” button.
Recent Events
The Recent Events table records recent monitoring activity recorded.
