Deprecation of AU.COM

Date Posted: 1st August 2013

Background

AU.COM was introduced to the Australian market at the genesis of Netregistry back in November 1997, with the intention to provide Australian businesses a sensible alternative to com.au. At the time .au domains were both very expensive (the cost ranged from $140 to $525) and restrictive in terms of registration requirements.

When we introduced AU.COM we received an endorsement from the late Dr. Jon Postel – then head of the Internet Assigned Number Authority (IANA), who in the years prior to ICANN were the de-facto global domain name authority. Dr Postel wrote that he believed that there should be competition to com.au and he strongly supported AU.COM.

AU.COM was initially well supported by the community, however over time as the .au namespace has became a competitive environment and the cost and regulatory barriers were reduced, AU.COM’s value in the market place has changed. Now, 16 years later the domain name space is very different.

With the introduction of the new top level gTLDs, we believe that the availability of multiple name spaces, the prospect of many more to come and the declining market support for AU.COM means that there is no viable future for the AU.COM name space. Netregistry is very excited about the new top level gTLDs, which we believe will significantly change the domain name space. As such, Netregistry has decided that we will deprecate the AU.COM namespace.

What does this mean for our customers?

We will be communicating to all customers who have an AU.COM, advising them of their individual circumstance and options available. We will commit to providing whatever assistance we can; however you will no longer be able to alter delegation details. This means you will not be able to delegate, re-delegate or renew your AU.COM name, additionally no new registrations of AU.COM will be accepted.

If you have an AU.COM domain name, it will continue to operate as is until 1st February 2015, regardless of its expiry date, to help facilitate a smooth transition and migration to a new domain name.
